Happy New Year! San nin faailok!

Yearofpig200_tcm4399229 Part of my job (which for some reason people think I don't do anymore) is managing the Modern Foreign Languages Environment for Learning and Teaching Scotland. We provide educational resources, guidance and training on all things languages, including, from today, Chinese New Year. Celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Pig in your classrooms with some background, resources and lesson ideas all on our Chinese New Year Special.

Chinese is taking on a growing importance internationally and Scottish schools are not any different. The MFLE's been covering the area for the past year.

New Chinese qualifications from the SQA
and Modern Foreign Languages Environment

From next week the next stage in bringing Chinese language and culture to Scottish schools begins.
I'll be part of a large and varied team developing the curriculum and resources for national qualifications in Chinese. They'll be available from 2008, I think, and as the MFLE is working closely with the Scottish Qualifications Authority, we'll be able to provide teaching guidance and resources from day one, a first for any languages subject where teaching guidance and exemplars have often come a year after the initial qualification launch.

And, of course, the new Chinese curricular resources will be free for all to use on the Modern Foreign Languages Environment.
