What a shame it was for the debate that Charles headlined at the Book Festival last week was so spoilt by the adolescent sniggerings and posturing of Ewan Spence and Brian 'I am Grand Theft Auto'.

His talk about 'We-Think' the previous eveing was so much more informative and
resepctful of audience!

Wow! Leadbeater seems to propose a profound and radical challenge on the whole direction and ethos of traditional Scottish education. But maybe we need to ask, just how traditional are we? What interests me here is the extent to which we are already embracing part of this manifesto. If a march of a 1000 miles begins with a single step then I think we can point to many schools, departments or individuals who are working to develop a new culture of learning and teaching. Likewise, Community schools, pupil forums, assessment for learning, e-assessment, strong school-college links and flexible hours are all standard features in many areas. I am beginning to think the concept of a "web 2.0 school" is more a process of trial, feedback and innovation than a final, specific destination.

I've long been fed up with the search for something new when the answers, for us in Scotland, at least, are under our noses. Changes happen incrementally ,involving all layers of the hierarchy. It's not at simple as bottom-up, top-down or somewhere in between. It needs a it of everything to make the change work. I think Charlie's way of expressing this change is really helpful.
